State Road Laws

This list of state laws should be helpful to RV owners. Note that information in red deals with specific restrictions on certain roads and also providing information about propane.

Alabama

  • Total length: 57'

All children under the age of four, regardless of weight, must ride in a federally approved child safety seat while traveling.

Arizona

Overnight parking is permitted but prohibited where posted.

Arkansas

California

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, fire extinguisher in RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes required on trailers with gross weight over 1,500 pounds.

Passengers may ride in fifth wheel with audible or visual device with tow vehicle and safety glass and at least one exit can be opened from the outside and the inside. Passengers can not ride in travel trailer. Passenger may ride in pickup camper provided passenger can communicate with drive and exit can be opened from both interior and exterior, or safety glass in window required. Seat belts are required.

Overnight parking in state rest areas is "as posted".

Towing travel trailers may not be allowed in snow areas. Contact the highway patrol before entering a snow area; chains may be required at any time. Trailers may be barred due to high winds, blowing sand, etc. Trailers over 20' may experience difficulty in negotiating hair pin turns on California State Highway 89.

Colorado

  • Total length: 75'

Connecticut

Required Equipment: Flares or reflective signs. Brakes required on trailer over 4,000 pounds unladen weight. Wipers/lights on when conditions require.

Riding is permitted in pickup camper only.

District of Columbia

  • Total length: 55' (excluding safety equip. and energy conservation items)

Florida

Hawaii

Required Equipment: Safety chain on designated rural interstates, some exceptions; breakaway switch required on trucks over 3700 kgs; flares or reflective signs; brakes on trailers over 3,000 pounds (gross weight). Lights/wipers must be on when conditions warrant.

Passengers may ride in pickup camper only. Overnight parking in state rest areas is not allowed.

Trailers are not permitted on boulevards in and around Chicago.

Indiana

  • Total length: 60' (excluding boat transports)

Iowa

Kansas

Required Equipment: Safety chain, breakaway switch, fire extinguisher suggested but not required for inside of RV, flares or reflective signs, brakes required that stops the combined vehicles within 40 feet at 20 mph. If triple towing and connected by tow bars, anti-sway mechanism is required on the first connection and the second towed vehicle must be equipped with brakes on the wheels of at least one axle. If at least one connection is by fifth wheel or saddle mount, no requirement for anti-sway or brakes on rear vehicle. Braking for two-vehicle combination applies.

Riding is permitted in fifth wheels, travel trailers and pickup campers by passengers fourteen years and older only.

Kentucky

LP Gas is prohibited on I-95 tunnels of Baltimore Harbor and Fort McHenry.

Massachusetts

LP Gas is prohibited between Boston and East Boston; Sumner and Callahan tunnels; Prudential and Dewey Square tunnels.

Michigan

Shuttle service is available between St. Mary and West Glacier. Restriction from Avalanche Campground on south side to Sun Point area on the north side

Passenger vehicles under 2,000lbs may tow one trailer. Cannot excede 65', and 3-unit combinations also cannot excede 65' (and only permitted if rear unit of the 3 is equipped with breakaway brakes)

It is unlawful for a person to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage within the passenger area of a motor vehicle while on a highway; however, this does not apply to the living quarters of a motorhome or travel trailer.

Overnight parking in rest areas allowed in designated areas only; not to exceed 18 hours in any two-week period.

New Hampshire

On the New Jersey Garden State Parkway there is a 55' maximum length. For the New Jersey Turnpike or other roads call 908-247-0900 for specific towing regulations.

LP Gas prohibited between Manhattan and Jersey City in the Holland Tunnel. Between Manhattan and Fort Lee, the lower level of the George Washington Bridge (I-95 South) and George Washington Bridge Expressway. Between Manhattan and Weehawken in the Lincoln Tunnel.

New Mexico

Motorhomes and trailers are NOT permitted on the Taconic State Parkway. Trailers are not permitted on most parkways.

LP gas is prohibited between Manhattan and Jersey City in the Holland Tunnel. Between Manhattan and Fort Lee, New Jersey lower level of the George Washington Bridge (I-95 South) and the George Washington Bridge Expressway between Manhattan and Weehawken, New Jersey: Lincoln Tunnel. LP gas is prohibited between Manhattan and Brooklyn on the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and between Manhattan and Queens on the Queens Midtown Tunnel.

North Carolina

Valve must be closed when in tunnel. LP gas as vehicle fuel is prohibited.
